AWCSC presents “Ensuring Effective Communications with Communities of Color”

May 23, 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

May 23
6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join the Association for Women in Communications Seattle Professional Chapter for an evening of discussion and learning.  We hear and read a lot these days about social justice, equity, and privilege. Some of us participate in protest marches calling attention to these issues, and some of us don’t know what these terms mean.  The City of Seattle has a “Race and Social Justice Initiative.” The UW this spring offered an “Equity and Difference” lecture series on “Privilege.” The Seattle Art Museum has an “Equity Team” working to broaden the museum’s connection with communities of color.

Understanding why this kind of effort is happening, and why it’s especially needed in today’s divisive political and social climate, is crucial for communicators to be effective in their jobs.  How do we as communicators improve our own and others’ grasp of what has led us to this point?  Can our work in communications promote understanding and inclusiveness?  How do our internal and external communications engage diverse audiences?  We’ll hear from Sili Savusa, Executive Director of the White Center Community Development Association, on these questions and more.
